When I was kid with mumps or measles, neighbor Chuck O'Connell loaned me this book in hardcover. I have read it a dozen times since and it has never lost anything with time, and it made me into the Andre Norton fan and S/F reader that I am today. It probably also is the root of my love of post-apocalyptic novels.
For a synopsis, read the reviews.
P.S. The original hardcover that Chuck loaned me was donated (along with a bunch of other books) to Fort Harrison, the V.A. Hospital in Helena, about 1980 by Chuck's son Larry while he was there.

The Best Book I Ever Read
The first Science Fiction book I ever read, since reprinted as Daybreak 2250 A.D.
