HOM: Fifth Debacle

I think I'm gonna skip over a lot of this last school year, and at best this is going to quite disjointed. Sorry. It was not a good time in my life. I had to do my Student Teaching that spring, and was assigned to a fifth grade classroom taught by a guy I knew from my first years at NNC. I did not do well at it, I was too scattered out to focus on teaching. Normally a student teacher was offered a job by the school they taught at. I was not. Part of this was due to a temporary surplus of teachers, part was due to me. Dealing with my marriage was kind of a full time job and kept me occupied, stressed and sleepless. Money, as it was to be for as long I was married, was tight. At one point I sold the Omega Seamaster wristwatch (Couldn't afford a Rolex!) I'd purchased at the PX in Japan to the principal of the school so I could pay bills. The one humorous incident from the school involved Lyn. The kids kept pestering me to find out my first name, and I kept telling them it was "Mister." Lyn got a part-time job working in the school lunch room and when the kids found out she was my wife they homed in on her for info. "What's your first name, Mrs. Handcock?" "Lyn." "What's your husband's first name?" "Mister." I gave her a "well done!" for that one. TBC (Me) (Blacktail Books)
