JJ: Piercings 1

Back in the late eighties, body piercing wasn't a fad like it is today, except for ladies who wanted to wear ear rings. I was one of the inadvertent pioneers in piercings for guys. It all started when I got a tiny old Kubota Diesel tractor from Eddie Shephard and a sickle-bar mower from a lady in Whitefish, figuring the combo would be great for some of the excess lawn and the sides of the driveway. Unfortunately the match-up between a full-size mower and a compact tractor wasn't ideal. All three points of the 3-point hitch attached pretty well, but the drive shaft from the mower to the PTO (Power Take Off -- a spinning splined shaft that delivered power from the tractor to various attachments) was too long. I left the mower hooked up to the Kubota with the sickle bar up so I wouldn't trip over it while I was trying to make things fit. A hacksaw was the only shaft-shortener I had, and working in a tight space on a hardened shaft with one was a little frustrating. Every time I bound up the blade and broke it I got a little madder and things went a little more downhill. The climax came when I broke another blade, abruptly jumped up and spun around to go get a new one, and ran the side of my head into that nice sharp point on the end of the bar. It hit the top of my ear and gave 100% penetration through the top lobe. I'm not sure what happened then -- the next thing I knew, I was holding the remains of the aluminum hacksaw handle, the bent frame of the hacksaw was on the ground, and there were chunks of metal caught in the teeth on the sickle bar. I guess I got mad. Bec was out in the barn and came out when I was back at work sawing at the PTO shaft again. She said she'd heard me yell, ran out to see if I was okay, then retreated back into the barn. She figured anybody cussing at the volume I was couldn't be too badly hurt despite the blood and it was NOT a good time to ask if I was okay. Shortly after this, I purchased a portable metal-cutting band saw. TBC (Me)
