HOM: Moose II

This trip in was considerably nicer than the previous year's. It stayed sunny & warm all the way in and the horses were cheerful & cooperative -- rare for any females, two legged or four. We traded off between riding Scarlet and walking, with each of us leading a horse, and it was so quiet all five of us either dozed or daydreamed as we trudged along. Well, until one of the four-legged members of the party decided to shake themselves, which they did periodically when they had an itch. That was a real wake-up call. If it was horse with a pack on, the noise was impressive; if it was the horse being ridden, the rider found himself suspended on an inch or so of air over a saddle that was whipping side to side for a few long seconds. Things were quiet enough and Randa was loaded lightly enough that Jim climbed up and sprawled on top of her pack and rode, leading Gurly while I rode Scarlet & led Randa. It worked pretty well and he almost dozed off till Randa shook off an itch of some kind. First time I ever knew Jim could levitate. We passed a nice camp and then found a site for our camp on Scott Creek a ways downstream from the lake. It was nice, there was some feed for the horses, firewood, and a nice spot for the tent and to stack the pack gear, to be covered with a tarp. TBC (Me) (Blacktail Books)
