HOM: Vehicularity Ensues

I bought a well-used little blue & white 1962 Chevy II six-banger from an about-to-be-discharged sailor I knew at Ocean Beach. It was transportation, more or less. At least it was a bit safer than the bike, more convenient than buses, and better for passengers & dates than the bike was. I spent a lot of time at OB, staying with a friend and his family. It was home away from home for me for a long time and the little Chev hauled me back and forth, reliably but gutlessly. This changed when my boss, EM1 Lundquist, bought a new AMC Javelin and decided to sell his convertible, a nice red/black 1967 Plymouth Belvedere II. I sold the Chevrolet to the Yeoman, Burgess, and bought the Belvedere, a $900 investment. The car cost $2900 when it was new, and in mint condition today would be worth about $20k. I wish I still had it! Burgess decided to have the engine in the Chevy II rebuilt, as it was rattling, and had an EN from the 98 do the work. Three of its six pistons were cracked, so I guess it had a good reason for being powerless! That convertible opened up a whole new world to me. With a big 383 V8, it was the most powerful rig I have ever owned and I had a tendency to use all of its power all of the time. My buddy had a good car too, and we used to race from his house at OB out to the La Jolla area where one of the girls we were dating lived. We took a shortcut through a residential area once, and I still remember looking in my mirror and seeing people running out into the street behind us and shaking their fists at us. TBC (Me) (Home)
